Y this author A collection f fun autobiographical stories I think we could all write a book like this if we thought hard enough but not everyone could write them as clearly and with such humor Grandma s Fun House was my favorite However I gave it The Desert Princes Proposal only three stars because nonef the stories are strong enough for me to remember a week later without looking through the "book again I loved Codell s novel Sahara Special so I was looking forward to reading this memoir f Codell " again I loved Codell s novel Sahara Special so I was looking forward to reading this memoir f Codell fifth grade years I found it rather disappointing however Parts f it are riotously funny and hit just the right notes there s an episode In Which Young Esme Talks which young Esme talks friend into punching her in the mouth in the hope f avoiding this week s piano lesson that s particularly great and there are great ne liners as well such as when Esme states that a particular rabbi looks like a Jewish Santa Claus and her parents in response looks like a Jewish Santa Claus and her parents in response her to please not tell him that r tell him about their Christmas tree But The Book of Pride overall it s really uneven somef the earlier chapters almost made me stop reading because the tone felt very condescending towards the reader It s also very short and ends rather abruptly So verall not as good as I d hoped it would be. Er made seem friendly and wondrous; the Passover dinner when she stole a matzoh right ut from under a rabbi; the awe inspiring life threatening Chicago snowstorms; and lessons about love from tea reading gypsies and Popeye cartoon.
